SENER is preparing the master plans for the development of two railway stations in India: Bijwasan Station in New Delhi and Shivaji Nagar Station in the city of Pune (150 km from Mumbai). In both cases the client is Indian Railway Stations Development Corporation Limited (IRSDC), a company that is exclusively dedicated to developing world-class stations from a formal, functional and operational perspective.

SENER’s work on both projects

SENER was awarded the two contracts in 2013 and, since then, the following work has been performed on the projects: preliminary studies on surveying, geotechnics, traffic, infrastructure, and technical and economic viability, in addition to environmental and social impact and a study of alternatives. Currently, SENER is developing the definitive solution and, as a consultant, it will also be responsible for the necessary approvals for developing all of the infrastructure, and for preparing the documents for the tender bid process for the station’s construction, in addition to providing assistance during the bidding process and proposing a final selection for the final contractor.

The brand new Bijwasan Station is located on 145 hectares in the Dwarka district, bordering the UER-II highway. Given its proximity to the airport there are limits in place on how high the buildings may be built. The other factors on the project include the two metro lines passing through the site and a channel that crosses the plot from East to West, as well as some of the current buildings.

SENER has designed a building complex arranged throughout a park –in the style of a green river– where the mixed-use buildings are located. The railway station is the only element that cuts across the space, making it the main element of the complex. The building is situated on 160,000 sqm distributed between a lower level, a ground level and an upper level. The main entrance is on the upper level where ticketing areas are located, as well as the control area, waiting areas and commercial area and where the metro can also be accessed. The ground level has the platforms and the passengers arrive to the lower level through a series of underground passageways that lead away from the platforms.

Meanwhile, the master plan for Shivaji Nagar calls for a new station, freeing up roughly 8.5 hectares, on the site where the current station is located, which will be demolished. The new station will be located in a high-traffic area with ample connections near the bus station, the Mumbai Highway and the metro. There are numerous existing factors in this case: a new rail yard, a traction substation, installations in the station building proper, in addition to housing, offices, and a school for the railway workers’ children. Furthermore, much of the site is occupied by suburbs, the management of which will limit the overall design.

SENER has proposed a solution where the station building will rise perpendicularly above the tracks, which will be arranged with two functional levels in order to separate the flow of passenger traffic, with departures on level +1 and arrivals on level -1. In total, the complex will take up 72,000 sqm divided between its lower level, its ground level and its upper level. The layout is the same as Bijwasan station: the main entrance will be on the upper level, across the ground level, where the control area, waiting areas and commercial area will be located. The ground level will have the platforms and passengers will arrive to the lower level through a series of underground passageways that lead away from the platforms. In SENER’s design, a commercial tower will rise 100 meters over the station, acting as an architectural icon. Another residential tower will be erected as well, together with two commercial buildings.
