The Angels Flight Funicular has been inaugurated and re-opened to the public. SENER, in consortium with ACS, has performed restoration works to reopen the line complying with the safety standards required by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC). SENER, along with ACS, will participate in the operation of the line during the next 30 years, due to an agreement with the non-profit organization Angels Flight Railway Foundation that includes all the recondition, operation and maintenance tasks during such period.

Therefore, SENER moves forward in the value scale of the services offered to its clients in the Infrastructure and Transport sector, taking part in the EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) contract and, additionally, in the operation of the infrastructure.

Besides, this is the first railway infrastructures project to be executed in the public-private partnership contract scheme in the State of California, which marks a milestone for the Los Angeles region.

Originally opened in 1901, Angels Flight –known as the world’s shortest railway, with a length just under 300 feet– has taken more than 100 million passengers along its hillside track. In addition to being an iconic tourist attraction and the setting for several films –among them, the recent Oscar-award-winning movie “La La Land”– the funicular will serve as an important transit connection between the Metro station at Pershing Square and the top of Bunker Hill, an area that includes Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Broad Contemporary Art Museum, MOCA, and the Los Angeles Music Center, among other cultural institutions.

SENER participation in this project will not only contribute to the revitalizing of Downtown Los Angeles but also shows SENER’s strong commitment to the City of Los Angeles, where the company has already developed other works. Among them they stand out the tender design proposal for the design-build project of the region connector, Los Angeles Union Station Master Plan and the environmental study plus development of the preliminary engineering of the route alternatives for the California high-speed rail line, between Palmdale and Burbank.
