Cartagena refinery hydrotreatment plant for lubricant bases

Repsol has awarded SENER the engineering and procurement management contract for the new lubricant oils hydrotreatment plant in its industrial refining complex in Cartagena (Murcia, Spain). This facility will use existing production of lubricant bases at the refinery, and will process a variety of dewaxed lubricant bases totaling around 142 kt/a.

In addition to the installation of the new group I lubricant bases hydrotreatment unit, the Repsol project encompasses the preparations for its future integration with the refinery’s current installations. These works feature new intermediary tanks and pumping facilities for the supply of unhydrogenated lubricant bases to the new facility, the unit’s embedded drainage system and associated pumps, the interconnection lines between the new plant and the existing refinery –both for process flows and for auxiliary services– and the new auxiliary services needed for correct operation.

Under this new contract, SENER will carry out the work over two phases. Phase I focuses on the development of the detailed design, which is needed to calculate an estimate for the investment and will have a precision of at least ±10%. The time frame for this is six months. Phase II covers the detailed engineering, purchasing management, construction supervision and assistance in commissioning. It is envisaged that this will be completed in May 2017.
