SENER hosted at its premises in Barcelona (Spain) a top level meeting with department heads from the space agencies ESA, NASA and ROSKOSMOS to plan a joint experiment using the MARES (Muscle Atrophy Research and Exercise System) facility, which was designed by SENER and was installed in the Columbus module of the International Space Station (ISS) in 2010. This new experiment could start in 2016 at the ISS and would assess the problems astronauts suffer in the muscle groups for the knee and ankle joints, where atrophy from prolonged weightlessness is most prevalent.
