The team responsible for the project ‘Barcelona High Speed Railway Tunnel: Protecting World Heritage Buildings’, in which SENER played a significant role, was selected as one of three finalists for the Fleming Award. The Fleming Competition is held annually by the British Geotechnical Association (BGA) at The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) to recognise excellence in the practical application of geotechnics in technical projects, placing an emphasis on multidisciplinary and innovative components. With more than 2,000 members, BGA is one of the top civil engineering institutions in the United Kingdom; the London-based international organisation ICE brings together roughly 80,000 professionals.

This year the technical team behind the Sagrada Família tunnel was in the running against two other projects in the United Kingdom: Queensferry Crossing and the upgrade of the Northern tunnels of London’s Victoria Station. While it was this last project that took home the award, this year’s competition was noteworthy in that it represented the first time a Spanish team had arrived to the final round.
