Mexico’s Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) has signed with the consortium comprising SENER and OHL Industrial the contract for the turnkey construction of the combined cycle plant Empalme I, located in the municipality of Empalme, in the Mexican state of Sonora, for 477 million US Dolar (approximately 445 million Euros). Furthermore, after its technical and economic assessment, CFE judged that our proposal met the highest possible rating.

The Empalme I combined cycle plant will operate with natural gas, producing 770 MW of power. Once operational in November 2017, it will supply electricity to northern Mexico, where, according to CFE estimates, the energy demand is set to grow by 3.6% per year.

In this project, SENER and OHL Industrial will provide services including the basic and detailed engineering, the procurement of all equipment, materials, spare parts and special tools, and the construction, testing and commissioning of the plant. The consortium calculates that around 1,500 jobs may be created in the local community during the construction phase.

This new contract award strengthens SENER presence in Mexico, second country for the company attending to its number of professionals and where it has developed several turnkey projects, among them the Agua Prieta II combined cycle plant, the Los Ramones and Frontera compression stations for Gasoductos del Noreste (GDN), the Alpek 95 MW co-generation plant in Cosoleacaque and the fluid catalytic cracking unit in the La Cangrejera petrochemical plant for Pemex. And also three other turnkey contracts in consortium with OHL Industrial: two co-generation plants for the CYDSA group and the TG-8 Madero refinery project for Pemex.
